Wallingford Town Council is thrilled to announce significant progress in the redevelopment of Bull Croft, bringing the new play area one step closer to reality. As part of the preparatory measures, the council is currently conducting essential archaeological surveys.
Awaiting the completion of two final surveys—the Bat Hibernation survey and the archaeological surveys—the council anticipates these crucial steps to be finalised and documented on the planning portal at South Oxfordshire District Council by the end of April 2024.
In line with the commitment to enhancing the park’s amenities, Wallingford Town Council has engaged RSK ADAS Limited to undertake comprehensive archaeological and geoarchaeological evaluations within the proposed development footprint. Scheduled Monument Consent has been secured from the Secretary of State (Department of Culture, Media and Sport) for both the Wallingford Saxon Town and Wallingford Town Wall, enabling the commencement of archaeological and geoarchaeological fieldwork.
Unfortunately, the ground in the park is still waterlogged and the ditch still contains knee-high water. Therefore, we have decided to push back the archaeological and geoarchaeological work for this site until 22/04/2024.
The archaeological team, alongside a mechanical excavator, will operate within the park. For safety purposes, the designated area will be cordoned off, including temporary closure of the children’s play area. Access to the park will be redirected through High Street or St Georges Road entrance, while the Black Ditch footpath remains accessible. These dates may change due to wet weather conditions and we will update this webpage if work needs to be postponed.
The council extends its appreciation for the community’s understanding and cooperation during this period of ongoing work. An open day is scheduled for Wednesday 20/03/2024 with the site open to the public from 1000-1400, offering an opportunity for interested individuals to witness the archaeological discoveries firsthand. We look forward to welcoming you there!
