Wallingford Commemorates 80 Years of Bravery and Sacrifice
On Sunday, 8th September, Wallingford came together to mark the 80th anniversary of a significant event in the town’s history—the bravery and sacrifice of two heroic pilots, Wilding and Andrew, who selflessly diverted their stricken plane away from the town to avoid disaster. In doing so, they paid the ultimate price with their own lives, a sacrifice that remains deeply felt and honoured by the people of Wallingford.
A solemn service was held at the Wilding and Andrew Memorial, where residents gathered to pay their respects. This was followed by a minute’s silence on Monday, 9th September, in memory of the two airmen’s extraordinary courage.
The commemoration continued on Wednesday, 11th September, when the Mayor of Wallingford, alongside the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Lynda Atkins, attended a special ceremony at the International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) in Lincoln. During this event, a plaque was unveiled in honour of Wilding and Andrew, a tribute from the people of Wallingford to ensure their bravery will never be forgotten.
This 80th year of remembrance stands as a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of sacrifice and heroism that shaped the town’s history, and the unwavering gratitude of its people.
We will remember them.
